Future Oceans
The Future Oceans Flagship aims to enable adaptation, use and effective responses to ocean change by understanding its physical, geological and chemical drivers.
Our science enhances understanding of oceanographic and physical processes, ocean climate, anthropogenic influences and their impacts on the marine environment. This allows us to support economic development and the effective management of resources, particularly in response to growing environmental challenges and marine hazards.
Chief Scientist - Future Oceans: Alan Orpin
Alan is a marine geologist who regularly collaborates across New Zealand and the Pacific. He has played a key role in numerous world-first research voyages and a range of commercial activities over a 26-year career. His current research interests include post-glacial sediment dispersal on continental shelves, slopes and basins, and event driven sedimentation from floods and earthquakes. In addition, he leads commercial activities into applications of seafloor physical properties and characterisation, and their influence on benthic communities and habitats.
